About The Fund
So many people have shown their love and support for Blain and our family by giving funds to create this scholarship; this is how we would like to pay it forward.
Our ideas for this fund are to grant scholarships to male or female athletes who have played any sport and are going to attend college or trade school.
For the first few years, we would like to grant scholarships to any male athletes that played alongside Blain at any point in his life.
Whether it be T-Ball, Majors baseball, Bluewave basketball, Raiders football, or high school, it can be any team Blain was a part of.
Any high school or currently attending college student may apply.
Also, any female or male athletes playing any sport who was a part of Blain’s elementary or high school life can apply.
Blain’s love for sports is the inspiration behind this scholarship, so we will ask you to fill out an application and write a short essay about either your love of a sport, an experience playing with Blain or against Blain, or what being part of a team means to you.
About Blain
Blain Alves, a native of Peaks Island, Maine, was everything you expect a wild, rambunctious islander to be, but he was also thoughtful and kind.
Recently, a woman was being helped at Home Depot by a lovely young man who said he went to Deering High School in conversation. When asked if he knew Blain Alves, his response was, "everyone knew Blain."
Everyone did know Blain for his good nature, his wit, his athleticism, and his infectious smile.
We could tell early on there was just something special about Blain. He charmed everyone he came in contact with.
As an athlete, he was a coach's favorite, always doing what was asked of him, whether he liked it or not. During one football game in high school, the quarterback and both backups were hurt and out of the game.
One coach said to another, what are we going to do... the answer was "Put in Blain." He wasn't a quarterback; he loved defense and being a running back, but he was asked, so in he went as the quarterback.
His young baseball career consisted of second, short stop, or third base, but when the team catcher had graduated in high school, they said we need a catcher. Blain was it. A new position he accepted and did his best at.
These reasons and many more are why he was awarded the "Unsung Hero" award and JV player of the year award in football, and the coaches award in basketball.
As a little brother, he was everything you expected to Madison, annoying, a pain in the butt, and she harassed him every chance she got. I always told her, be careful; Blain will be bigger than you someday.
As they grew into young adults, Blain again was everything you expected to Madison, her best friend, her partner in crime, her loyal protector. Only once did a teammate make "comments" about Madison; Blain took care of that during a defensive tackle drill.
As a son, all the things we just mentioned are all reasons we couldn't be more proud of Blain.
He was a role model for many younger kids, making us proud. There's a connection between a mom and her son and a connection between a dad and his son; it's a connection that will last forever. We are so proud of the man Blain was growing into.
